Elite on the Bail

Before David opened the family's very first chip shop in Huddersfield he would deliver the best locally grown potatoes to chippies across the town for frying.

But when the opportunity to open his own fish and chip takeaway arrived, David knew the time was right to stop supplying and start frying.

Using his experience to source only the best local potatoes for the perfect chips and freshest fish caught from the docks in Hull, David, together with wife Freda, opened the first Elite in 1972.

After spending years helping out behind the frying ranges, chip off the old block Adrian followed in their footsteps, aged only 15, and a second Elite fish and chip takeaway soon followed.

Sixteen years later our drive to offer customers something more than takeaway fish and chip meals steered us south, to Lincolnshire.

In 1988 the first Elite Fish and Chip Company restaurant and takeaway opened in Ruskington village and it won the National Fish and Chip of the Year Award in 1992.

Three years later we opened another Elite in the historic cathedral city of Lincoln offering seating for over 100 guests and the same great takeaway service.

Third generation fryer Rachel, the 2015 Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year, kept the family business growing further by opening Elite's third restaurant and takeaway in the market town of Sleaford in 2012.

Over 40 years later we're proud to be using the very same traditional home-made batter from Elite's founding takeaway in the 1970s and will continue to for years to come.

The wife and I called in here whilst looking for somewhere to eat. From the outside it looked very presentable. Inside looked lovely and clean. The staff we're very polite and hospitable. We ordered fish, chips and curry sauce off the lunch time menu for £10.90 which came with a drink. Have to say the food was lovely, and would definitely recommend. We would definitely visit again 😊

It’s hard to compete with the Elite. We’ll be going back to Elite On The Bail as soon as the chance arises. The food and the service were THAT good. But it does come at a price. Ironically, it wasn’t as cheap as chips. We ordered : -Regular Cod & Chips with Peas and Curry Sauce. -Large Cod & Chips with Peas and Curry Sauce. -Frickles - Battered Pickles. -A Coke and a Lemonade. and it came to just under £45. For Fish & Chips. We know what you’re thinking. That’s an absurd amount to pay for Fish & Chips ( and frickles and drinks) but until you try Elite’s srcan, you won’t understand why it’s priced so high. It’s phenomenal. The fish were massive, even the regular one. They were both chunky pieces of fish that tasted fresher and lighter than most other chippies we’ve been to. The chips were delicious too. Would we have wanted a few more? Probably not. There seemed to be just the right amount. The curry and peas were standard chip shop curry and peas, but we did seem to get a good amount of both. On to the Frickles and these were right up our street. £3.25 for 10 decent-sized chunks of Pickle coated in batter with a sauce is great value in our opinion. ( They’re even cheaper if you’re getting takeaway) Overall, for Fish & Chips, we do think it was teetering on the expensive side, but you do get what you pay for. We were looked after well by the staff and the food was exceptional. Elite are in an area of the city where rent is at a premium, so the price of goods is going to reflect that. Best Chippy in Lincoln? It’s definitely in the conversation!

I met some friends for a meal today. I have never been and I really enjoyed the food. I had the Smoked salmon and prawn salad then I had the Carrot cake with icecream and it was absolutely delicious 😋. The Carrot cake was the best that I have ever had.

I saw the big sign on the back of this building while I was walking over the castle wall. I finished my tour and thought I should try this restaurant that took my eyes. It was an excellent choice. The place is spotless clean. Smiling helpful ladies. Food was freshly prepared and quickly served. I tried the signature Cod fish and chips. Very well prepared. Tasty. Decent portion. Price reasonable. Nice interior decor. This was the cherry on the top of this magnificent trip to Lincoln.
