What is a Parallel Hybrid?

These have an electric motor which powers the car alongside the engine, allowing a smaller engine to be used because the motor can help out when a lot of power is needed. The motor also acts as a generator when the car is slowed down and recovers energy to partially recharge the battery.

What is a Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV)?

This is one step further along towards a pure electric vehicle. Most of these include all the technologies of a full hybrid, but have larger batteries. These can be plugged into the grid and their increased supply of on-board electricity allows them to run in all-electric mode for up to 14 miles depending on the make and model.

What is a series Hybrid?

A small engine runs a generator to charge the battery and a separate motor uses power from the generator and, when necessary, the battery to power the car. Because the engine cannot directly power the car, this arrangement suffers from greater electrical losses and needs a bigger electric motor.

Series hybrids may also make use of stop-start and regenerative braking but they tend not to return as high an amount of EPA-rated mpg.
