2019 winner of The Great Scratch Shoot Out, Nina Lewis, shares her thoughts on the importance of competitions…
What are your thoughts on industry competitions? Why are they so important?
I believe you need tenacity when entering competitions. I also think they are a great way of learning from your mistakes if you do not get the results you anticipated. It is also a great way to find like-minded people.
If you do not win, do not be disheartened. Go back with a positive attitude, mind set and approach, understanding why you did not win before.
Competitions are important as they keep standards high with participants and judges. Everyone should engage in CPD no matter what your status is.
How did it feel to win The Great Scratch Shoot Out 2019?
It felt like it was the icing on the cake and was a great accolade for all the hard work and dedication I have put into all areas of my industry.
I encourage others to enter to experience the feeling of support from the Scratch family and to be more of a recognisable figure in the industry. Plus, it’s an honour to be published in a world-renowned nail magazine.
How has the competition aided your career?
The competition has enabled me to have a larger and more recognisable presence throughout the UK regarding my training facility. It has allowed people to get to know who is behind Nina Lewis Training.

Milan Wadhwani5 StarI just finished this amazing course to become a nail technician and I have to say Nina Lewis was absolutely fantastic! She covered everything I needed to know to pursue a career in this exciting field, including nail anatomy, nail care and maintenance, manicure, pedicure, gel and powder polish, nail art and sanitation and safety.
What I loved most about this program was the hands on practice. Nina was so helpful, supportive and constantly provided constructive feedback and advice that really helped me to improve my skills. She was always patient and encouraging and her passion for the industry was truly inspiring. She made learning so much fun and I genuinely didn't want it to end!
I would highly highly recommend this program to anyone who is looking to pursue skills as a nail technician. Nina truly is amazing and I feel so confident in my ability to create gorgeous nails and provide high quality nail care services to clients. Eugenie Reid5 StarNina recently carried out personal tuition at my home showing me the basics of facial care and the different levels of make from a natural day look to an evening special event look.
Nina takes care with the explanation breaking down the instructions to make herself easily understood. She uses a multi sensory approach to get her point across through modelling and demonstrating the different techniques.
I would recommend Nina as a trainer and also as a make up artist for a special affair. She makes you feel special and builds a rapport and relationship as she trains. An incredible experience ✨️Friday 26th August 2022
Quiana Wilson5 StarI trained with Nina at Waltham Forest College, in Beauty Therapy (level 2) and Advanced Nail Course over a decade ago. Nina trained me, and supported me to compete in the UK World Skills Competition and I was awarded Gold!
You only have to look at the reviews to understand how amazing Nina is. She is incredible. I owe so much to Nina. I learnt so much in a very short space of time. And I will forever be grateful for the opportunities Nina presented to me.

H Kaur5 StarBefore meeting Nina Lewis I had been to many leading schools and nobody was as passionate about teaching nail technology as Nina so I immediately booked on a few courses and I haven't regretted it since.
Nina Lewis has now been my Nail Tech Teacher for nearly 3 months. Nina has been a very organised and supportive teacher. I have managed to gain both technical, practical and theoretical skills with Nina's courses. I knew nothing about Nails before meeting Nina but now I am confident to carry out treatments. Nina has taught me how to be professional and carry out health and safety during nail treatments which is something that other courses hardly teach at this level. It is rear to find such a highly skilled nail technology teacher and I really wouldn't wish for another teacher other than Nina as she is extremely talented. Thank god for Nina Lewis - if you book a course with her, you won't regret it.Wednesday 18th December 2019
