St. Mary's is the parish church of the Ancient Parish of Penwortham and dates from the 14th century. Although located in an urban area its setting is very attractive being in the midst of ancient woodland. The Chancel dates from the 14th century and the Tower dates from the 15th century. The Nave was rebuilt and enlarged in the 19th century. The church has 2 communion services on a Sunday and a communion service every Thursday morning.  We have an active Junior Church called Sparks  and a Messy Church called FAB (Faith and Belonging). Our church re-ordering project was completed in 2011 and we returned to church in June of that year. We have installed under-floor heating, removed pews and replaced them with chairs and carried out repairs to the outside of the church. This meant that the church was closed for almost 2 years.  During that time services were held in our Church Hall on Cop Lane. The church hall land was  sold in 2018 and retirement apartments have now been built on it. Lord Jesus,  you brought the blessings of forgiveness and love,  caring and fellowship to all whom you met in your earthly life.  So by your grace and in the power of the Spirit,  help us to share those same gifts  with all who come to St Mary’s, in hope and expectation. Amen

By chance I found myself in the churchyard and I was asked if I would like to have a look inside the church and I am glad I accepted because it really is a neat, well maintained and lovely church.

A place of tranquility for all. The churchyard is a haven for wildlife and the birdsong is beautiful to the ear. Come to worship or just come for peace.

I hate to not give a higher review to a church, especially as the building itself is lovely. You can see from my photos it is a rather small building and is quite older, however it is clear the church and the immediate grounds are maintained to a high standard and look very nice. The issue for myself is that the graves sounding the church are very dilapidated. Many of the headstones have fallen down with the ground in some places disturbed and bricks and mortar laying strewn in some areas. For me this puts the star rating lower than others may have done but many people look highly on the church as the final resting place of their loved ones, and if all the headstones are damadhed or knocked over it does not give a good impression. If this was rectified and the graveyard improved I feel this would be a 5* area.
