The Rowantree was originally called Lucky Middlesmass’s Tavern and is celebrated in Robert Ferguson's much loved poem , "Cauler Oysters".
It was the watering hole for the all the key figures in the Scottish Enlightenment, Rabbie Burns, David Hume, Adam Smith, Deacon Brodie, with visits from James Watt and Benjamin Franklin.
