Working in Winchester

Winchester is one of the most diverse and prosperous urban centres in Hampshire. This is reflected in its employees’ wages which are generally higher than those of neighbouring towns and cities.

The introduction of the ‘Winchester District Economic Strategy 2010-2020’ is working towards making Winchester a better place to live and work. As well as a popular mentoring scheme to boost employment rates and improve the city’s skills pool, the council is also providing support for young workers, and offering lifelong development for those who are already employed.

Many people find employment in the public sector (education and healthcare), such as tourism vacancies, retail jobs, distribution, hospitality, finance jobs, and business services. Some of the main employers in the city are IBM, Zurich Insurance and Winchester City Council.

Schools & Education

Winchester has a reputation for providing excellent schools for all ages and is one of the main reasons why people relocate to the city.

Practically all its primary and secondary schools have been rated as good or outstanding by Ofsted. Many parents add their names to admission waiting lists long before their children start school. St Peter’s Catholic school, St Faiths CofE and Kings secondary school are among the best performing and most popular schools in the area.

Winchester is perhaps most famously regarded as being well serviced by the private sector with many of the best public schools in the country found within the city’s reach.

There is the co-educational Prince’s Mead School just to the north, The Pilgrims’ School boys’ prep, St Swithun’s for girls and of course, the oldest public school in the form of Winchester College.

Had a very professional service with White & co. The three man team of Josh, Brian and Russell did a great job including dealing with a very difficult and unexpected situation during the move. They were professional and responsive throughout.

What an awful service, damaged furniture and damaged property. Compensation slow to be offered via ‘3rd party’ insurance company and the amount was wholly inadequate but apparently it’s a take it or leave it situation... No apology received from the branch manager just excuses. If you manage to get a good experience with this company then I would suggest it is purely luck.

Can't really recommend this company. Moved with them last August, they turned up late and understaffed, took all day to do a move that had taken a couple of hours with the same furniture a year before. Moving into the new place they managed to break part of the sofa and scuffed the walls.
